“菜鳥”和“大蝦”

菜鳥，形容一個人上網很“菜”，用來比喻網絡新手，英文中的對應詞是newbie；

大蝦，諧音自大俠，形容網絡高手，英文中的對應詞是knowbie，表示a knowledgeable and experienced Internet user.值得一提的是這兩組詞在各自語言中都有比較一致的相關性，中文中的“菜鳥”和“大蝦”戲謔成分較重，適合以文字體現，口語中廣泛流傳的可能性不大，而英文中的“newbie”和“knowbie”音節少，口語中發音簡單易懂，拼寫起來形象易記，含義上可以擴展到互聯網外的其他場合，具備廣泛的群眾基礎，已經出現在各大正式媒體中了。

“灌水”和“潛水”

論壇是網絡交際的重要載體，在這里創造出來的網絡用語自然最多，最常見的非“灌水”和“潛水”莫屬。

中文里的“灌水”一詞形象生動，一些人為了獲得積分在論壇里反復留言，在回別人帖子的時候沒有做出交際性的評論，只是簡單的表示“同意”、“支持”，內容與主題無關，這種現象在英語中叫 bump，它在論壇里是“頂”的意思：To bump a thread on an internet forum is to post a reply in order to raise the thread's profile by returning it to the top of the list of active threads. This is also called "necroposting". 這種“灌水”往往被認為是一種垃圾留言（spam），被很多論壇禁止。

“潛水”指在論壇、聊天室等只瀏覽不發言的行為，這樣的人好似“潛水員”，永遠不浮出水面。“潛水”在英語中的對應詞是lurk：
v. Lurking is an activity performed on Internet Forums or Chat rooms that involves wandering the website, reading posts and never actually posting anything. 長期“潛水”會導致論壇人氣不足，這樣的member最終會被管理員取消成員資格，但在剛剛加入某一論壇時為了了解論壇的風格和討論的主題短時間的“潛水”是被接受和鼓勵的。
